Don’t Forget These Luxury Kitchen Design Details in Your Remodel

Date

What makes a kitchen unforgettable and desirable is not the size or style. A remarkable kitchen is about how it makes you feel, and the luxury kitchen design details you choose can make all the difference.

Of course, we put great energy into the very large components of any kitchen we design. The cabinet layout is critical and sets the stage. The plan must be custom-crafted to your unique needs. Cooking is a dance, and each person moves differently.

Second to the layout are the appliances, the machines that keeps the kitchen running. Investing in these two categories is a big part of what will bring you the kitchen experience you desire.

Luxury Lives in the Details

What most people don’t think about are the small, thoughtful, and intentional luxuries that can be woven into the design. When executed properly these luxury kitchen design details will elevate your kitchen experience. We have been putting care and consideration into every kitchen we design for more than a decade, and we know how important these details are.

Are you right-handed or left-handed, taller than the average person, or do you treat cooking as a group experience? What kind of technology do you find useful? Which types of service stations will best meet your needs? Do you have sensory or health considerations we need to consider? This article will expand on these luxuries so you can head into your first design call with a clearer picture of how you want to experience your new space.

Luxury Tech Details That Disappear Into Design

This image features a dark, modern kitchen with luxury design details that feature technology.

We live in the sweet era where technology has advanced far enough to be a delightful integration into your home’s functionality. The kitchen is no exception, and we often find ourselves incorporating luxury kitchen design details like voice controlled or pre-scheduled lighting and shades, or ensuring the controls are app enabled so you can easily modify the settings when you need to.

Adding secret touches like charging stations inside of drawers, hiding power outlets behind the cabinet trim, and ensuring they have both USB and USB-C integrated can help keep your countertops clutter free. Wireless charging in the countertop is another way to keep things convenient and visually clean for the areas where you’d like to charge your phone.

Water fixtures are now technologically capable of pouring your exact measurements on command. Simply ask your faucet to “pour me 1-1/2 cups of water,” and hold your mixing bowl below. We also recommend pairing any fixture you may be using as a drinking water source with in-cabinet water filtration to ensure you are removing contaminants from the water at the point of use.

Many appliances, small or large, now have cameras, temperature sensors, cooking presets, and are app-enabled to help make your life easier and give you more time. One of our favorite innovative small appliances is not only time and space-saving, but it uses less energy to get dinner on the table than any other appliance on the market. It is a true example of a luxury kitchen design detail that works hard behind the scenes.

Discreet Luxury That Serves You Daily

This image shows a close up of an espresso shot pulling, indicating a luxury kitchen design detail that can be integrated into the kitchen appliance package.

Let’s face it, kitchens get a lot of use, more so than any other area in your home.  Small, subtle and well-designed features can provide big value in everyday life. These luxury kitchen design details make daily routines feel seamless and special.

Planning for beverage stations or service areas can make your daily routine a breeze or create an experience when hosting, depending on your goals. Features like espresso machines, wine fridges, or even sparkling water taps are small ways to keep it lively in the kitchen.

If you like to entertain, or have a large family, we highly recommend more than one dishwasher in your kitchen or adding in dishwashing drawers. This can ease in your post-party cleanup and support a large household on the chore everyone dreads the most. By applying a cabinet door look to the dishwasher, we can also keep cleanup invisible.

Refrigerated drawers are a great way to sneak in extra storage for snacks, drinks, or fresh fruits and vegetables without the look of an added refrigerator column. Placing them in the island can keep foot traffic to the main fridge at a minimum in households where there is a lot of demand.

Hidden gems like pull-out waste bins, recycling, and compost containers keep your kitchen always organized and stylish. It’s also a plus for pet owners because you won’t come home from a night out to find your beloved pup has had a garbage party for you to clean. If space allows, we love adding a scullery or secondary kitchen space, sometimes referred to as a butler’s pantry. This is a great place to hide your prep, extra dishes, or a wonderful location for a caterer to set up for the big events you might be hosting. We are always sure to include a sink, a dishwasher, and a few extra appliances in these spaces. This keeps your main kitchen clean and guest-facing so you can relax and enjoy your evening.

Wellness-Focused Luxury Kitchen Design

Wellness in the home is a movement gaining momentum. We have collectively become aware that some of our time-honored material choices, or daily practices, don’t support our well-being. In fact, some of the choices that were made in decades past were outright harmful to our health. This shift toward wellness-focused luxury kitchen design details is generally manifesting in two pathways:

1. Healthy Material Selections for Your Kitchen

Two people discuss material options to include as their luxury kitchen design details.

What many people don’t know is just how many chemicals exist in the materials and finishes inside their home. Most adhesives have a formaldehyde base, which is has been linked to asthma and some forms of cancer in humans. Similarly, finishes and paints contain volatile organic compounds, known as VOCs. VOCs are odorless gases that often take decades to completely release from the substance or material finish. All the while, they are contributing to low indoor air quality, which has long-term adverse effects on your health and safety.

Working with a designer who understands the ins and outs of healthy material selection will make this process feel less overwhelming. Material selections to consider in your kitchen if you would like to protect your health:

  • Certified formaldehyde-free cabinets. Cabinets are made with plywood or medium density fiberboard, and those materials are made using glues that typically contain urea formaldehyde. Don’t despair! Many cabinet companies offer an option to upgrade to low or no formaldehyde, and a sustainable interior designer will already have the right vendors in their library.
  • Avoid plastic flooring. Whomever coined the term “luxury vinyl flooring” was a marketing genius. Homeowners are sold on how easy it is to clean and how pet-friendly it seems to be. However, many homeowners don’t know that this is a fancy term for plastic flooring. Vinyl is plastic. The chemical compounds in plastic also off-gas and cause long-term health problems. Instead of vinyl flooring, we recommend a solid hardwood, double-layer engineered hardwood, or cork for kitchen floors. These products are natural and can be finished with natural oils or bio-based waxes. In the future, they can be refinished should there be any damage. The best part about using these natural materials is that they won’t make you or your family sick!
  • Lead-Free Tile. Did you know that many of the glazes in beautiful tile contain contaminants like lead? This is where your sustainability-focused design team will come in clutch, knowing which brands to avoid so you can steer clear of the hazard.

    2. Kitchen Features That Support Your Wellness

A woman smiles as she is about to take a drink from a class of clean, filtered water.

Creating spaces that foster and support a wellness lifestyle requires an understanding of your direct goals and what wellness means to you. One of the most important stages in design, the programming stage, is where your designer will learn about these needs. When you work with a designer who shares your same concerns, you can be free to express your needs without judgment. Some of the luxury kitchen design details we include to support wellness are:

    • Water Filtration. Depending on the scale of your project, we will investigate the best way to ensure the water you drink is safe. For our clients working on a larger-scale project, we recommend a whole-home system. For those tackling a kitchen alone, there are many options to reduce the level of chemicals, PFAS, toxins, and pharmaceuticals that enter your drinking water. It is important to ensure you have access to easily maintain these systems and that they are included on all water lines used for food prep or drinking water. That includes pot-fillers, coffee machine lines, in-fridge water lines, and in-counter water taps.
    • Healthy cooking. Gas appliances in the home have been found to contribute to poor indoor air quality. As more municipalities change building codes, gas cooktops and fireplaces are one of the most common appliances that are getting harder and harder to pass inspection. The wonderful news is that the induction cooking sector has not only been reliable for decades, but has also grown in popularity for many reasons. The cooking is more precise, it is safer for small children with wandering hands, there are no harmful fumes released into the air, and it is the most efficient stove-top cooking method. What a win!
    • Air purification and proper ventilation. As mentioned above, everyone uses their kitchen differently, which matters when it comes to proper ventilation and air filtration. If you use a gas cooktop and cook multiple nights per week on high heat using oil, we will need to include more ventilation and filtration than a household using an induction top to make scrambled eggs and boil water for pasta once or twice per week.

    The Details Define the Experience

These details can feel overwhelming, so we like to remind our clients to keep the end goal in sight. How do you want to feel on a snowy Saturday morning as you sit in your new kitchen with a warm cup of tea in hand? You will be grateful for the large island countertop where you and your children gather to make holiday cookies and share stories in no time.

Luxury kitchen design details will be felt in your lived experience and in the moments to come, long after we have completed our work for you. This is why it is important we focus on the details in the beginning and throughout our design process.
